Report a Fume or "Odour" Event

A fume event can be anything from visible (white) fumes, to various strengths of "smells" comparable to: wet dog, vomit, electrical smell, oil /burning smell, sweaty feet/gym shoes, chemical smell. Symptoms can occur immediately and could be: go to symptoms.

If you are a pilot, flight attendant or air crew member and you experience an oil fume/ toxic fumes event on board a passenger aircraft then you have a mandatory duty to report it. If you are a passenger and experience an oil fume event then you have a public health duty to report the incident.

Examples: (Note: can be raised with other aviation authorities as well)
  • Safety concern reports from the public 
  • Whistleblowing/ Reports by aviation industry employees or ex-employees
  • As per a BALPA request airlines should disclose engineering reports >> HERE

There are a number of fume events on board passenger aircraft every year including those we have documented below from 2017.

Please report an incident to the relevant official aviation authorities. Make sure to take a screen shot or a print-out for your files.

Note: you can of course share your information also with non-official organizations, but do not only report to them - in case of any form of legal action you must have reported the the aviation authorities and written a formal complaint to the airline!
